Background And Tools

Mary is a believer in inclusion and has spent her career working in education through the Extension system in Pennsylvania and Minnesota working with diverse audiences and topics. As an advocate for those who are often forgotten and are disenfranchised, her passion is equality and inclusiveness. In addition to her earned degrees, she is also certified to administer the following tools:

Intercultural Developmental Inventory
The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) is a statistically reliable, cross-culturally valid 50-item, theory-based measure of intercultural competence adapted from the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity.  Mary can administer the inventory or you can take the assessment on line.  Mary has incorporated the IDI for individual assessment and coaching, group and organizational assessment and training and it can be used in analyzing team building efforts or to evaluate the effectiveness of various diversity training interventions.

Intercultural Conflict Styles
This instrument is the premier assessment and training tool for identifying core  approaches for resolving conflict across cultural and ethnic  differences. The ICS Inventory is accompanied by the ICS Interpretive  Guide and ICS Facilitator’s Manual.

Real Colors
Mary is a certified facilitator of the Real Colors® Personality Instrument which is simple and easy to administer system for identifying the four temperaments (Blue, Gold, Green or Orange ). It provides users with an effective tool for understanding human behavior, for uncovering motivators specific to each temperament and for improving communication skills. Most importantly, Real Colors® is easy to incorporate into all areas of daily life. It is the key to achieving higher levels of success, personally and professionally.  Mary has successfully used this instrument in the corporate board room, with youth, non-profit organizations, and religious organizations as a tool to help participants better understand themselves, relationships with others, and how to effectively work together.  It has also been a great instrument for organizations on the road to working effectively cross-culturally and building leadership teams.

Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
Certified in the MBTI for over 12 years, Mary  uses the MBTI effectively with multiple groups to help people make sense of personality psychological types described by C. G. Jung  The theory’s focus is that much seemingly random variation in the behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent but due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.

Asset Based Community Development
Since attending the training of the ABCD Institute Mary has effectively worked with foundations and other community groups to incorporate the principals of ABCD’s growing movement that considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, asset-based community development draws upon existing community strengths to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future.
